I finally (after months of waiting) received my Strongspace coupon tonight.  About a year ago, I signed up for TextDrive’s “VC III” plan, which was/is a lifetime hosting account, as long as the company is around.  Back in early Feb., I signed up for their “Mixed Grill“, which adds Strongspace and Joyent to your lifetime account.

Strongspace was only supposed to be 9gigs of storage but after several delays, and after updating server equipment and software, I now have 20gigs of space, unlimited download users (no bandwidth limits), and I can add up to 2 more upload users.  Good stuff…well worth the wait.

Although I am a loyal “VC” customer at TextDrive, I have another reseller hosting account to hosts sites for family, friends, and a few clients. I always have a watchful eye for the next big host (never to trump TextDrive of course). I came acroos Mosso, a pretty innovative host offering large resources for $100 a month.

There are a few downsides: no SSL, no custom nameservers, no auto-signup scripts (these three items are coming “soon”), and most importantly they do not have Zend or ionCube optimizer’s installed for their PHP installation. This means some PHP packages (like some forums, task management software, helpdesk software, etc.) will not run on their servers. I’m thinking these guys would be good for blog hosting and/or remote file storage. Did I mention they were in the RackSpace DC?

There’s nothing better than a good task management software package.  Software that can actually keep your life organized is worth the trouble to learn to use, and as with any “management” type software, you have to actually change how you do things in order to fully utilize the software’s features.

I’ve tried several times to use Kingdesign’s Tasks package but finding a host that meets every single feature requirement was no easy task (pun intended).  The past couple of months, I’ve been on different servers, neither of which worked 100% with Tasks.

Enter TextDrive.  Not only does everything work (even with PHP5 support), I am also able to shell into my account and get down-and-dirty with Crontab.  Ironically, if I had checked this page months ago, I would have made the move over to TXD officially at that point.  I suppose it pays to read documentation…no?

I am finally utilizing my TXD account.  I’ve had a lifetime account for awhile now but only used it as a backup/hobby space.  After many months of figuring out how Webmin works and playing with linux, I decided to move my domain over here.

I noticed load times are a fraction slower than my old host, but it’s nothing major and totally worth the move to be at TextDrive.

Wow! These guys never cease to amaze me. TextDrive, now owned by Joyent, has once again offered a new lifetime hosting plan. This time, they have included the use of Strongspace (online secure file sharing/storage) and Joyent email services. I purchased a VCIII lifetime hosting account sometime ago and just upgraded to add their other offerings.

My TextDrive hosting account has been one of the most educating and fun experiences I’ve had when dealing with internet technology. If you can float the $499 (or $199 if you’re a VC customer already), I highly recommend it…it’s simply awesome.

Yes, for a very limited time (as in…maybe just until this weekend is over), TextDrive is offering their lifetime hosting accounts for $399. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Very much so. You can only sign up via their link on the forums (here).

I highly recommend you get one of these accounts, as it’s a great backup to have in case your main host goes away OR if you just want to play with raw linux webhosting. I’m a member of the VC3 group (you’ll get it, once you read the forums). Good stuff…good stuff.

This scares me. They say everything will stay the same but rarely does this happen. I have a lifetime hosting account over there and I hope it stays the same, but only time will tell. TextDrive is a fun place to play with a website and linux, mainly because they have a “let’s load it and see what it does” attitude.

Joyent brings cool stuff to the table and I can see the merger on paper, but overall I hope TextDrive keeps the same open-minded attitude towards hosting and technology in general.

You can do some cool stuff at home with a comptuer and free Linux software.  ClarkConnect is an all-in-one package that allows you to run your email, web, and MySQL database applications all in one place.  I’ve dabled some into this, but never really done anything with it.  Reeves has though and I wanted to share with everyone what you can do with an “older” machine and FREE software.  I give you…Darthbender.

It seems Matt and the guys have decided to remove the “invites” over at WordPress.com for a little bit. If you ever wanted your own blog, WordPress is the defacto standard in blogging tools.

The cool thing is, should you want your own blog but cannot afford (or don’t want to mess with) hosting, WordPress.com is the same interface and software you would have if you hosted it yourself.
